Hudson W. Scott Legacy Campaign

Today we ask that you join us in celebrating the life of Hudson W. Scott.  A common fear that we share as parents of child loss is that our child will be forgotten by others.  While we have done as much as we feasibly can to remember his name and the life and beliefs that he represented, we hadn’t yet found a way to establish his legacy in a way that can impact and save lives for many generations of youth.

Recently, we were approached by a friend who works tirelessly to achieve the goals of Indiana Youth Group (IYG) to inform us of an inquiry on Hudson’s Story.  Throughout IYG’s $2.6M “The Power of Safe” capital campaign to support their new facility in Indianapolis, they have consistently shared the story of our son.  Of his challenges with acceptance, harassment, and ultimately the depression that he lost his life to.  It wasn’t until after our loss that we learned of the amazing work that IYG does by creating safe spaces, providing wellness programming, and educating LGBTQ youth and the community throughout Indiana. Since learning about IYG we continuously think, I wonder if IYG could have made the difference.

GIVE HOPE - Let us give something to each person we meet: joy, encouragement, assurance, love, wisdom, hope for the future.

After sharing Hudson’s story an ask came in from longtime supporters of IYG.  They were touched enough by Hudson’s story that they asked if his name was being included in the buildout plans. After learning that it was not in the current plan, they made an incredibly generous and humbling offer.  They informed IYG that they will match up to $30,000 in capital funds to secure his name on a key youth space in the building.
As parents, we do not want the legacy of our son to be that he died by suicide. We want the legacy of Hudson W. Scott to be of the enlightening effect of his smile when he walked into a room.  We want it to be about the blind and endless love of his heart that he shared with so many.  We want to remember the forward-thinking brilliance of a young mind, wanting nothing more than a place where all can be accepted and loved.

It is on this 30th day of July, 2017 that we have been afforded the greatest gift that one could give to our child on his posthumous 16th year of life.   This is our opportunity to secure “Hudson W. Scott” and his story as a pillar in the foundation of support and hope for the LGBTQ community in Indianapolis.  Over the next 60 days with your help, through our partnership with Indiana Youth Group and the generous match opportunity from The Health Foundation, the reality of this incredible honor is upon us.  Through online auctions, solicitation of private donations and corporate gifts, we are now in pursuit of marking Hudson’s 16th as one that we can all celebrate eternally.
Happy sweet 16 Hudson.
With all our love,
Wes and Jenna
